Each year, I challenge my students to read 40 books. This is not a competition or an assignment. It is a challenge I hope they will work toward. I encourage students to read widely, trying every genre, to improve their reading ability by expanding their reading experiences. I believe there is a reader in all of us and that there is a ‘right’ book out there for every student. I believe reading is a personal journey, and research shows that readers who have a choice in what they read are more motivated and engaged in that journey. You can read more about the 40-book challenge here. The 40 Book Challenge
Below are the 40 Book Challenge sheets for Kindergarten, grades 1-2 and grades 3-5. Kindergarten – Grade 2 will need to check the appropriate box and write the book title in the chart on the back of their sheet. Grades 3-5 need only write the title of the book in the appropriate square.

Students who choose to meet the challenge will be entered into our end of the year drawing for some reading prizes. This is not a race or an assignment – students have all year to complete the challenge – the deadline to turn in the challenge to be added to the prize drawings is May 12, 2025. Students who complete the challenge will also have their picture posted on our ‘Triple-Crown Reader’ wall in the library.
Please feel free to contact me through Parent Square (Laura McGill – SFES Librarian) if you have any questions or would like a hard copy of the challenge sent home with your child. Happy reading!
