the boys and girls so I'm going to show you today how to unravel a text for better comprehension so unravel is something that I always used in my classroom to help students navigate a Dent passage with text dependent questions civil oh you noticed that we have a bunch of text dependent questions when I say that they are explicitly stated in the text means that the question will be directly answered within the passage we just have to read until we find out so the first step of unravel is to underline the title so I'm going to go and underline the title and the next thing I need to do is predict the passage that this text is named the 13 colonies 13 colonies going to give me an idea of what the colonies were comprised what kind of resources they had and what type of people lives there the next thing we want to do is run through number the paragraph always have sometimes a passage will already be numbered for you but I'm going to go ahead and label the paragraphs just to make sure that we understand how to read a paragraph it's forever the text indent towards the right so the first one is at the very top where it says through the 1600 someone in there the next thing I wanted you is go and find my second invention so I see however England's I'm going to put a tooth are 3DS another invention to the right with a colonies 4 + 16 is 7 Jamestown five why was it a big deal if the another intention to the right when it says each section of the 13 colonies from Elizabeth 6 and then lastly however the colonists would decide that is 7 okay now I'm ready to read the questions and then Venture through the passage now you might wonder why do I want to read the questions first why not just read the passage first the reason for that is so that as your reading especially a nonfiction text you are anticipating what it is that you are looking for for information so the first passage question is red and it says why were the colonies settled on the eastern coast of America so I like that word why because it signals to me that there the reason and the reason I'm looking for is that the colonies are settled meaning why were they developed and the sprouted up on the eastern coast of America eastern coast is orange who were the 13 colonies so to me that makes me see the word who and in the 13 colonies example and I be looking for the names of the colonies like Georgia Massachusetts Bay Pennsylvania the third question what did each of the colonies use for trade after set all right I see that's yellow and I see the word what and then used for trade that's important so maybe they have resources like if your New England you had fishing or Lumber the middle colonies perhaps grains & Threads maybe the southern colonies Indigo & cotton next question is green and it says what were the three sections that made up The 13 Colonies so again I'm going to circle that word what and we have three sections and 13 colonies it to me I'm thinking that there Thirteen Colonies all along the eastern coast of the Atlantic and they are divided based on probably their region and probably also their resources and their climate next question is blue and it says how did the plantations help the colonies and why were they not considered good so this is a double question how I see plantations help and then also see why so I'm looking for a reason not considered good okay alright in the last question why would it be difficult for the colonies to go an insult so again I see that I'm looking for a reason why difficult to govern themselves okay so now I'm right Adventure through the passage as I read I'm going to highlight the answers to our questions and I don't want it over highlights this isn't a coloring sheet okay but I also don't want to under highlight I want to directly answer the question that has been asked so now I'm going to start reading route the 1600 and 1700 the Eastern on the eastern coast of North America England established territories or area is known as colonies there are 13 section Massachusetts New Hampshire New York Rhode Island Connecticut New Jersey Pennsylvania Delaware Maryland Virginia North Carolina South better life let me check and see was there a question that asked about the new world no there wasn't so I'm going to continue on paragraph 3 the colonies were located on the eastern coast because of the travel I bet from Europe this side of the new world was the closest to Europe oh that's an answer to my first question and red why were the colonies settler on the eastern coast of Africa well they've already given me that and it says that this side of the new world was the closest to Europe 1607 Jamestown became the first settlement in North America for Europeans Jamestown is there an area known today as Virginia not far behind in 1620 pilgrims project Plymouth Rock and built their own settlement this is in Massachusetts this was the beginning over the next Century more settlements would emerge in the colonies France would be the country that would take land further west into America and Canada this became a huge conflict between England and France in the mid 1700 England Americans to be allies during what we know now as the French and Indian War because of the help from the Native Americans England won the war and ultimately took control over most of Canada this Victory allowed England to strengthen his power in the colonies let me see do they ask any questions about the French and Indian War no okay. Going about Jamestown so I'm going to continue on medicine just gave them access play goods from England and fashion editor and many Traditions from their loyal leaders even their governments were designed after the English government with England's King Is Earl and protect her however this is not keep the colonies from finding their own traditions and identities so no questions were asked about why it was a big deal for Canada to become part of it and the battles between France and England's I'm going to continue reading each section of the 13 colonies was unique in its cell the northern colonies Massachusetts New Hampshire Connecticut Rhode Island we're still with people seeking to exercise their freedom of religion they also became fishermen and farmers their crops and catches would feed their families and also be used for trade the middle colonies Delaware Pennsylvania New York and New Jersey were vastly diverse in their population a primarily German Dutch and Irish people did while in farming and trade they also had many factories the southern colonies Maryland Virginia North Carolina South Carolina and Georgia focus on large Farms owned by wealthy family different types of of crops tobacco cotton and rice and sell them to other in areas of the Caribbean succeeded do to African American population that was brought to the Americas starting in 1617 they were not paid but rather forced into labor now I'm going to stop because I think I have spotted some of our answers here so it says what did each of the colonies used for trade after settling that color is yellow so the New England colonies he is crop and catches that would be their families the middle colonies did well in farming and trade they also at factory and the southern colonies relied on farms and they would use tobacco cotton and rice as part of their trade I also think I see the third question here excuse me 4th the green month what are the three sections that made of the 13 colonies here I see the northernmost colonies where are New England colonies they are Massachusetts New Hampshire Connecticut and Rhode Island then I see the middle colonies Delaware Pennsylvania New York New Jersey lastly I see my Southern Colonies Maryland Virginia North Carolina South Carolina and Georgia okay so I've hit two birds with one stone In this passage or this paragraph So now I will continue reading I still have the blue and the purple question to answer about how plantations help and why they were not good and then the purple question why would it be difficult for the colonies to pick up random self however the colonist was soon decide that they would want to rule themselves instead of paying someone else to do it for them this was lead to many conflicts between the and establish European countries and the new group of citizens who lives on a new land with no ability but no military background or well to fight seem to talk about plantations in the 7th paragraph so let me look back into the sixth paragraph 6 paragraph let me go to the southern colonies because I know that they were comprised of large Farms also known as plantations so they would Farm different types of crops tobacco cotton and rice and sell them two colonies and areas of the Caribbean African-American OGG the African American population that was brought to America starting in 1617 they were not paid but rather forced into labor okay I think I found my answer here first reason of why play plantations help the colonies is because they would sell their crops to other areas of the colonies and he's in the Caribbean but unfortunately Sally the plantation succeeded Jew to force labor they were not paid or rather for smell okay and so now for my final question and answer why would it be difficult for the colonists to govern themselves semi 7 paragraph and I read back and says however the colonists as soon as I'd so they wanted to rule themselves instead of paying someone else to do it so I think they did not want to pay someone else to rule for them so I have gone through my unraavel stuff we have underlined and predicted the message we're answering number two paragraphs provide our questions first and circled are important words we ventured through the passage we eliminated incorrect information information we didn't and then we let the questions B and
